About the event
For the past 18 years, I've taken our horses to train with Melanie Turner, and it's one of the few things I've remained committed to through thick and thin. The benefits I've seen, not just for myself but for every horse I've brought to her, are immeasurable. In the early days, when I dabbled in competition, Mel's deep knowledge and her exceptional teaching style allowed us to achieve far beyond what I thought possible. She taught me to truly understand how horses move and why—and how my own position as a rider influences that movement.
What has always stood out to me is that Mel never just taught me how to ride; she taught me how to train. She helped me develop a profound, long-term understanding of equine movement.
While competition is no longer our focus—having been there and done that—we now prioritise understanding the physical needs of each of our horses, finding ways to help them feel comfortable, confident, and balanced. Mel has been indispensable in this journey, particularly in recent years as we've explored the benefits of groundwork. This approach works wonders for horses of all ages and abilities, regardless of any physical challenges they may have.
Some of our horses aren't well-suited for riding, but through groundwork, they still enjoy mental stimulation and learn to use their bodies to the best of their abilities. Even better, it's incredibly rewarding and helps to build deep trust and a strong relationship between us and our horses.
On Thursday, September 5th, we are excited to offer our Behind the Scenes members an exclusive opportunity to observe Mel in action. You'll have the chance to watch and listen as she trains Jodie with Iceman, myself with Maaike or Doutzen, and Freya in her very first session with Oebe.
The sessions will run from 11 am to 2 pm, and when you’re not watching the training, feel free to spend time with the horses in the yard and Friendship Barn where you can help yourselves to refreshments. Even if you don't watch every session, you’re welcome to relax and make yourselves at home. We know it’s short notice, but if you can join us, we promise it will be an unforgettable day!
