We’re so excited to offer this unique opportunity exclusively to returning visitors who already have a good understanding of the sanctuary and our ethos — to walk with our Friesian horses on the beach this year and experience the magic in a whole new way.

But that’s not all! The beach walk is just one part of a magical day spent immersing yourself in Friesian beauty, both at our stunning Greenbank Farm in the Lake District and out on the sands.

Many people dream of riding a horse on the beach, but for various reasons (such as age, fitness, experience, or confidence), it’s not always possible — so we’re offering the next best thing!

Even though we spend every day with our Friesian family, it always feels magical to be around them — whether walking beside them or simply watching from the ground — and we love to share that feeling with our visitors, both in person and virtually.

We know each of our horses inside and out, and several have spent many joyful hours at the beach over the years. We know which ones are happiest strolling gently along the sand, which ones love to roll, and which ones enjoy splashing in the sea!

We will be taking three Friesian horses to the beach. Each horse will be supervised and accompanied by a member of our team, with a maximum of two Participants per horse.

This is what your day will include:

10:00am - Arrival at the farm

*Introduction to the team and to everyone joining us for the day (ALL)

*Tour of the farm and facilities to 'Meet the Horses' and learn a little more about them, our Sanctuary scheme and what we do here (ALL)

*Introduction to the horses heading to the Beach. This is your chance to get to know them, learn about their characters, how to lead them safely and build your confidence. We will make the final allocation of horses to participants at this time (Participants Only)

*Groom & prepare horses for travelling to the beach (Participants Only)

*Make yourselves at home on the yard, chatting to all the horses and team (Spectators)

12:00pm - Travel to Bardsea Beach

*The journey takes 40 minutes in the horsebox and ALL visitors will need to follow in their own vehicles. (ALL)

*Unload the horses and prepare them for their walk (Participants)

*Head out to the beach where the time leading the horses will be split equally between participants. There is no set distance or route to walk as this will be individually tailored (Participants)

*Spectators are welcome to join us out on the sands

3:00pm - Finish & Return to the Farm

*You can choose to leave from the beach OR join us back at the farm to clean the horses up and put them to bed for the night (ALL)

Weather

We have chosen dates when it is more likely the weather will be kind to us.

Even with light rain on a summers day it is a lovely experience however if we do get gale force winds and driving rain we will look at rescheduling the trip as its important horses and visitors enjoy the day and are safe and happy.  If we have to make this decision, you will be advised asap and your payment will be transferred to the next mutually convenient date.

Clothing

Sturdy footwear and long waterproof boots/wellies are recommended if you wish to paddle in the water with the horses and not get wet feet!!

Waterproof trousers / jackets and gloves are recommended

Refreshments

Please bring a packed lunch with you for the day

Hot and cold drinks will be available at the farm and there is an excellent ice cream van located at the beach (Roys Ice creams) who also serve drinks
