Wybren

Wybren, a traditional Dutch/Friesian name meaning ‘Warrior’ or ‘Noble Bear,’ quickly became affectionately known as Teddy Bear when he arrived at the Sanctuary in 2022. He came alongside his best friend, Ysbrand (Iceman), after their owner faced sudden and life-changing circumstances that made it impossible to care for them. Knowing they needed to stay together, she entrusted them to the Sanctuary, confident they would receive the love and understanding they deserved for the rest of their days.

From the moment Wybren stepped off the lorry, his soft, soulful eyes seemed to hold the wisdom of the ages. He was the kind of horse who immediately captured your heart. With his gentle nature and almost childlike innocence, Wybren just wanted to do everything right. He would become a little distressed if he thought he had made a mistake, always striving to please. In the field, he stayed on the sidelines, avoiding squabbles and dominance battles, content to quietly coexist with the other boys. His sweet and kind soul made him a favourite of everyone he met. Although Wybren had a loving and gentle demeanour, he carried a deep sensitivity. Life often overwhelmed him, particularly sudden noises or anything above his head. Yet despite his worries, his thoughtful and conscientious spirit shone through, endearing him to all who spent time with him.

In 2024, Wybren’s life took a heartbreaking turn when he was diagnosed with a rare and complex issue in his leg. Unable to continue working, he became one of our cherished “Free Reiners,” living on the yard and finding a new purpose as the “Yard and Vehicle Inspector.” Wybren diligently greeted every vehicle, thoroughly checking out its occupants before allowing them to pass. His teddy-bear-like nature and unshakable sweetness earned him a devoted following, lovingly known as “Team Teddy,” who supported him through his treatment with an outpouring of love, well-wishes, and gifts from all over the world.

Wybren’s story was one of beauty and bravery. Before his diagnosis, he had participated in a magical medieval event in Cartmel village where his majestic presence left a lasting impression with all who saw him. His role was even featured on our local Channel 5’s program about the Lake District in late which aired in late 2024 will be forever viewable on the Sanctuary’s YouTube channel. Tragically, despite every effort to save him through surgery, his recovery didn’t go as hoped. At just nine years old, the decision was made to let Wybren go, sparing him any further pain. It was a devastating loss for everyone who loved him. Fittingly, his farewell coincided with the 110th anniversary of Greenbank Farm being in the family—a poignant and bittersweet moment to honour a truly extraordinary soul.

Wybren’s ashes now rest in the Sanctuary’s memorial orchard beneath a beautiful Malus Domestica 'Discovery' apple tree—a fitting tribute to a horse whose life was as sweet and special as the fruit it will bear. His loss has left an enormous gap in so many hearts, but his memory lives on in the love he inspired. Tracey often reflects on the connection he shared with her original heart horse, Droomie, imagining the two galloping together now, free of pain, in endless green fields beyond the rainbow bridge. Wybren’s legacy lives on in the joy he brought to countless people, both in person and online, and in the countless hearts he touched around the world. He will forever be our sacred Teddy Bear, his spirit living on in the Sanctuary that he called home.
